Yeah they wouldn't be doing vaulting if it hurt the horse. Come on those people love horses! If I remember correctly that horse was wearing a martingale so he was carrying himself and raising his back. He looked perfectly comfortable, they were landing softly. No harm done to the horse, great video.

None - if something a vaulter did injured a horse, it wouldn't just slowly develop over the course of his lifetime, he'd be sore and sensitive the next day and you'd know about it! Most of the horses I know absolutely love their job - including horses who were BITTER doing upper level dressage previously. Compare what a vaulting horse "endures" against a CIC*/** cross country course, upper level jumpers, reining, etc.. and our horses are INDEED spoiled.

The way that you practice and learn the moves, you arent on the horse at all. When you move on to the horse, it makes it a whole lot easier and you already know everything and can do it with out hurting the horse. You get to where its second nature and the jumps are really easy.
Another reason to have the horse's head pulled up like that is if you have a neck base, they are usually holding someone up, and if the horse puts his/her head down, the person slides off way too easily.

it wouldnt seem strapped to his neck if he were going foreward. i thought they also marked the horses movements a little.. he has a four beat canter at one point ? supose that makes him smooth though..

that is the point, in vaulting, they horses neck has to stay close to his chest. ifcourse they take it off, when they are done.. 7 minutes is nothing for the horsie & plus he is strong and well built. A horse at my riding place, like this horse in the video done it for 30 minutes :O

I wonder if the horse is entertained, or is amused by the people using him like a vault? because longeing for 7 minutes alone would be so boring. Whenever I lunge my horse, it's usually 2 minutes each way.
